Rockin Garages Book Summary : “Terraplane Blues,” “Rocket 88,” “Little GTO,” “Mustang Sally,” “Cadillac Ranch,” “Little Red Corvette.” For nearly as long as there have been cars, musicians have penned songs about them. And no genre loves the car like rock 'n roll. Cheap gas, open roads, car radios, and rock music all came of age in the 1950s, and songwriters stepped on the gas and never looked back. Whether hauling amps to the next gig or flaunting the rewards of a chart-topping album, rockers love their cars. But for some musicians, cars aren't just a reflection of success or fodder for the next hit song—they're a full-on obsession. Rockin' Garages takes you inside the collections, behind the wheel, and on the track with 20 of rock's most passionate gearheads. AC/DC's Brian Johnson and Pink Floyd's Nick Mason discuss their love of racing; Fabulous Thunderbirds guitarist Jimmie Vaughn and country star Keith Urban extoll the virtues of cruising low and slow; Doobie Brother Pat Simmons and Billy Joel showcase their extensive motorcycle collections; Sammy Hagar, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Michael Anthony reveal a need for speed reflected in garages filled with Ferraris, hot rods, and muscle cars. If you love cars and rock and roll, you'll marvel at the eclectic range of vehicles inside, including Camaro, Mustang, Aston Martin, Lincoln, Lamborghini, Harley-Davidson, Porsche, Bentley, Cadillac, Triumph, and even Checker cabs! Crank up the stereo, turn the page, and get ready for a hell of a ride!

Rocking the Closet Book Summary : The all-embracing, "whaddya got?" nature of rebellion in Fifties America included pop music's unlikely challenge to entrenched notions of masculinity. Within that upheaval, four prominent artists dared to behave in ways that let the public assume—but not see—their queerness. That these artists cultivated ambiguous sexual personas often reflected an understandable fear, but also a struggle to fulfill personal and professional expectations.Vincent L. Stephens confronts notions of the closet—both coming out and staying in—by analyzing the careers of Liberace, Johnny Mathis, Johnnie Ray, and Little Richard. Appealing to audiences hungry for novelty and exoticism, the four pop icons used performance and queering techniques that ran the gamut. Liberace's flamboyance shared a spectrum with Mathis's intimate sensitivity while Ray's overwrought displays as "Mr. Emotion" seemed worlds apart from Little Richard's raise-the-roof joyousness. As Stephens shows, the quartet not only thrived in an era of gray flannel manhood, they pioneered the ways generations of later musicians would consciously adopt sexual mystery as an appealing and proven route to success.

Rockin in the Desert Book Summary : In the early days of recording in Arizona. Phoenix was isolated from National record distribution. Local musicians that wanted to record, had to drive out to the West Coast. In the mid-1950's this all changed when Floyd Ramsey set up Audio-Recorders of Arizona in Phoenix., followed by Lee Hazlewood's early VIV studio which he sold to Loy Clingman and Buddy Wheeler, from which emanated many strong Chart contenders, some made by Donnie Owens that made the National charts. Later Loy Clingman (Who was also a Schoolteacher), recorded many groups on his 'Indie' labels from his 'Garage 'studio, operated out of his house. Due to the low pressing numbers and popularity of these records, they are highly sort after by record collectors and one day, many will reach the same 'price range' of ancient curios. The 'Teen Years' heralded in the 'Pop Music' era and this was augmented by local Country music which mutated into a new form of music known as 'Rockabilly'. Within this environment many local musicians rose to National and International fame, such as Duane Eddy, Sanford Clark and Lee Hazlewood. This book is an attempt to explain the process and evolution of recording and the work of those who were directly involved in putting Arizona 'on the map', the Recording Engineers, Singers, Musicians, Record Producers and Composers.
