Outliers Book Summary : Learn what sets high achievers apart -- from Bill Gates to the Beatles -- in this #1 bestseller from "a singular talent" (New York Times Book Review). In this stunning book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band. Brilliant and entertaining, Outliers is a landmark work that will simultaneously delight and illuminate.

As demonstrated in Outliers, culture, family, demographics, chance circumstances, and hidden advantages can have as much, or more, to do with an outlier's success as IQ or drive. Throughout Outliers, Gladwell uses compelling research and fascinating case studies to demonstrate his assertion that nobody achieves success on his or her own merits. In short, the book is akeeper." –Mathematical Geology "I would highly recommend the addition of this book to thelibraries of both students and professionals. It is a usefultextbook for the graduate student, because it emphasizes both thephilosophy and practice of robustness in regression settings, andit provides excellent examples of precise, logical proofs oftheorems. . . .Even for those who are familiar with robustness, thebook will be a good reference because it consolidates the researchin high-breakdown affine equivariant estimators and includes anextensive bibliography in robust regression, outlier diagnostics, and related methods. The aim of this book, the authors tell us, is‘to make robust regression available for everyday statisticalpractice.’ Rousseeuw and Leroy have included all of thenecessary ingredients to make this happen." –Journal of the American Statistical Association

Outliers Book Summary : In the dusty ruins of the world, three groups exist: the Sovereign, the Fortis, and the Outliers. Within their walled city, exclusive access to the only remaining technology gives the Sovereign an advantage that seems impossible to beat. In exchange for meager scraps and free reign outside the walls, they use the brawn of the Fortis to their advantage while the Outliers struggle to survive. Living on land that has not healed from the poison of the past, and surrounded by dangers too numerous to count, the Outliers have adapted - but to the Sovereign and the Fortis, they are nothing. Indra is an Outlier. Each day she braves the wastelands, making the dangerous journey from the wilds where she lives to the City so she can serve the Sovereign in order to give her family a better life. Inside the walls, she has no rights and no freedom. Not only is she powerless to resist the Sovereign's harsh rule, but she is also unable to do anything to save her people from the brutality of the Fortis. For centuries they have made their abuse of Outliers a sport, but when Asa comes to Indra's rescue, she sees something different in him. Something that marks him as so much more than just a Fortis guard. But as Indra's world begins to unravel, even the quiet alliance she has formed with Asa cannot save her from the wrath of the Sovereign. In one life-altering moment, everything Indra has ever known is ripped away, forcing her to face a world even more harsh and unforgiving. Broken and scarred, Indra finds herself on a journey that will challenge everything she's ever been taught, learning along the way that she's stronger than she ever imagined. Maybe even strong enough to free her people forever.

Identification of Outliers

Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media

Identification of Outliers Book Summary : The problem of outliers is one of the oldest in statistics, and during the last century and a half interest in it has waxed and waned several times. Currently it is once again an active research area after some years of relative neglect, and recent work has solved a number of old problems in outlier theory, and identified new ones. The major results are, however, scattered amongst many journal articles, and for some time there has been a clear need to bring them together in one place. That was the original intention of this monograph: but during execution it became clear that the existing theory of outliers was deficient in several areas, and so the monograph also contains a number of new results and conjectures. In view of the enormous volume ofliterature on the outlier problem and its cousins, no attempt has been made to make the coverage exhaustive. The material is concerned almost entirely with the use of outlier tests that are known (or may reasonably be expected) to be optimal in some way. Such topics as robust estimation are largely ignored, being covered more adequately in other sources. The numerous ad hoc statistics proposed in the early work on the grounds of intuitive appeal or computational simplicity also are not discussed in any detail.

A Statistical Technique for Computer Identification of Outliers in Multivariate Data
Author: Ram Swaroop
Publisher: N.A
Release Date: 1971
ISBN 10:
Pages: 29 pages

A Statistical Technique for Computer Identification of Outliers in Multivariate Data Book Summary : A statistical technique and the necessary computer program for editing multivariate data are presented. The technique is particularly useful when large quantities of data are collected and the editing must be performed by automatic means. One task in the editing process is the identification of outliers, or observations which deviate markedly from the rest of the sample. A statistical technique, and the related computer program, for identifying the outliers in univariate data was presented in NASA TN D-5275. The current report is a multivariate analog which considers the statistical linear relationship between the variables in identifying the outliers. The program requires as inputs the number of variables, the data set, and the level of significance at which outliers are to be identified. It is assumed that the data are from a multivariate normal population and the sample size is at least two greater than the number of variables. Although the technique has been used primarily in editing biodata, the method is applicable to any multivariate data encountered in engineering and the physical sciences. An example is presented to illustrate the technique.

Outliers Matter in Survival Analysis

Pages: 40 pages

Outliers Matter in Survival Analysis Book Summary : Generally, but not always, the most influential observations (cases) possess the largest Cox-Snell residuals. A case which has a variable far out in the factor space may be more influential than a case with a large residual. Either kind of outlier can affect inference. The plots of the log survival curve of the residuals and the corresponding variance-stabilized transformation generally do not indicate the importance (influence) of large residuals on estimated parameters. Regression parameter estimates from the Cox proportional hazards model are just as sensitive to influential cases as are fully parametric models. Influential observations often suggest other modelling deficiencies, such as a poorly-specified factor, nonproportional hazards, or an omitted variable. The analyses indicate how broadly-based the conclusions are. We found no evidence to support automatic exclusion of outlying observations. Outlier diagnostics based on linearization (the log-likelihood and its derivatives) work very well. The measure of importance tends to be compressed at its upper end, so the impact of very influential observations tends to be understated.
