Getting Naked with Harry Crews Book Summary : Harry Crews on getting naked: "If you're gonna write, for God in heaven's sake try to get naked. Try to write the truth. Try to get underneath all the sham, all the excuses, all the lies that you've been told. . . . If you're gonna write fiction, you have to get right on down to it." "Harry Crews cannot refrain from storytelling. These conversations are blessed with countless insights into the creative process, fresh takes on old questions, and always, Crews's stories: modern-day parables that tell us how it is to live, to work, and to hurt."--Jeff Baker, Oxford American "Harry Crews has indelible ways of approaching life and the craft of writing. This collection shows that he elevates both to a near-religious artform."--Matthew Teague, Oxford American In 26 interviews conducted between 1972 and 1997, novelist Harry Crews tells the truth--about why and how he writes, about the literary influences on his own work, about the writers he admires (or does not), about which of his own books he likes (or does not), about his fascination with so-called freaks, and about his love of blood sports. Crews reveals the tender side under his tough-guy image, discussing his beloved mother and his spiritual quest in a secular world. Crews also speaks frankly about his failed relationships, the role that writing played in them, and his personal struggles with alcohol and drugs and their impact on his life and work. Those seeking insights into his work will find them in these interviews. Those seeking to be entertained in Crewsian fashion will not be disappointed. Harry Crews on his tattoo and mohawk . . . "If you can't get past my 'too'--my tattoo--and my 'do'--the way I got my hair cut--it's only because you have decided there are certain things that can be done with hair and certain things that cannot be done with hair. And certain of them are right and proper and decent, and the rest indicate a warped, degenerate nature; therefore I am warped and degenerate. 'Cause I got my hair cut a different way, man? You gonna really live your life like that? What's wrong with you?" On advice to young writers . . . "You have to go to considerable trouble to live differently from the way the world wants you to live. That's what I've discovered about writing. The world doesn't want you to do a damn thing. If you wait till you got time to write a novel or time to write a story or time to read the hundred thousands of books you should have already read--if you wait for the time, you'll never do it. 'Cause there ain't no time; world don't want you to do that. World wants you to go to the zoo and eat cotton candy, preferably seven days a week." On being "well-rounded" . . . "I never wanted to be well-rounded, and I do not admire well-rounded people nor their work. So far as I can see, nothing good in the world has ever been done by well-rounded people. The good

Sleeping Naked Is Green Book Summary : No one likes listening to smug hippies bragging about how they don't use toilet paper, or worse yet, lecturing about the evils of plastic bags and SUVs. But most of us do want to lessen our ecological footprint. With this in mind, Farquharson takes on the intense personal challenge of making one green change to her lifestyle every single day for a year to ultimately figure out what's doable and what's too hardcore. Vanessa goes to the extremes of selling her car, unplugging the fridge, and washing her hair with vinegar, but she also does easy things like switching to an all-natural lip balm. All the while, she is forced to reflect on what it truly means to be green. Whether confronting her environmental hypocrisy or figuring out the best place in her living room for a compost bin full of worms and rotting cabbage, Vanessa writes about her foray into the green world with self-deprecating, humorous, and accessible insight. This isn't a how-to book of tips, it's not about being eco-chic; it's an honest look at what happens when an average girl throws herself into the murkiest depths of the green movement. Reviews “A humorous, self-deprecating tale of the crazy things that happen to normal people when they take the green plunge. Vanessa Farquharson will have you wanting to try your own experiments, too, because she shows how easy some of these planet-saving changes can be.” —Alisa Smith, co-author of The 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating “By spending a year putting the planet’s needs as a top priority, Vanessa Farquharson’s search for love and connection leads her to happiness she never thought she could know. An entertaining approach to ‘greenlightenment,’ Sleeping Naked Is Green will surely inspire other skeptics to find their inner environmentalist.” —Gillian Deacon, author of Green for Life “One step a day doesn't seem like much, but over the course of a whole year it adds up to a world of difference. This isn't just a well-written and fun book about going green, it is about watching a personal transformation. Being inspired was never so entertaining.” —Lloyd Alter, TreeHugger.com
Getting Unf cked and Then Getting Naked Book Summary : As a boudoir photographer, I encountered women who desperately wanted to love themselves. Many felt unlovable, unworthy, and unbeautiful. I found my calling in helping women build their confidence, overcome their insecurities and negative mindset. After creating a program called "Perfectly Imperfect Body Image Boot Camp" (now re-named Get Unf*cked), I got into the minds of 6 amazing women who were vulnerable and raw with me. The idea to create this workbook, and include life experience contributions from women all around the world, was in my mind, a way to reach more women who needed this help. This workbook is broken up into chapters, themes if you will, that include stories surrounding body image, trauma, family secrets, sex, and more. Each chapter contains contributions of life experiences shared by brave women, who were ready to have their voices heard. Some are anonymous, some are not. That was their choice. After each chapter, there is an opportunity for the reader to share their own personal life experience with prompted questions and journaling opportunities. Prompted journaling has been found to help to take the pressure off of the reader, who may be struggling with the "I don't know what to write". The questions asked are the same for each chapter, and the reader is given the opportunity to re-write their story. "Getting naked" references to vulnerability, but the reader is welcome to participate in the naked mirror challenge presented. This workbook is also filled with inspiring quotes, but also coloring pages, as coloring has been found to reduce anxiety. Towards the end of the book, the reader is given strategies on shifting their mindset as well as overcoming self-sabotaging behaviors and inner critics. The very last exercise is likely the most important, and that is forgiveness. Forgiving yourself, but also the asshole who hurt you. This book does contain profanity, as I did not want my contributors to feel like they could not be their authentic selves. I've learned that when a woman swears, she is telling her truth.
