This thesis investigates the potential of including topology optimization in the design process of the Inter Tank Structure, a primary structural component of the Ariane 6 upper stage. The goal is to enhance the efficiency by lowering its mass with optimization methods, to cut production and operation costs. For this purpose, an optimization methodology has been developed to implement structural optimization in the design process. The Finite Element Method will be used as basis for optimization and linear static structural analysis. The theoretical background will cover the mathematical basics of optimization, an introduction to the Ariane launcher family, possible material options, introduce topology optimization and discuss a software solution for structural optimization. Three design concepts will be introduced. Two will be developed from the beginning by using optimization techniques, the other one has already been developed, but not dimensioned to meet Ariane 6 requirements. Topology optimization will be used to identify the main load paths and therefore the ideal material distribution. The impact of different optimization goals like minimizing mass or weighted compliance will be investigated, as well as the influence of used materials on optimization results. The design concepts will be generated with computer-aided engineering and -design. Structural optimization techniques of size- and free-size optimization will be used as tool, with the objective to improve performance of the design concepts.
