The book Gamete and Embryo-fetal Origins of Adult Diseases introduces various diseases resulting from the abnormal gametogenesis and embryo development, which manifests as growth retardation, birth defects, or increased susceptibility to chronic metabolic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer in childhood and adult life, even fertility disorders and the risk of transgenerational transmission. Six common kinds of these diseases are discussed in separate chapters. The authors explore the connections between these diseases and epigenetic reprogramming, rapid cell differentiation and organ formation and environmental influences, including assisted reproductive technology and adverse intrauterine environments. With a summary of findings on the causes and progression of adult diseases at the phase of gametogenesis and embryo development, this book provides insights into the pathogenesis of disease and aids in the treatment and prevention of disease, meeting the requirement for improving the quality of the newborn population, and effectively preventing and curing major diseases at an early stage. This book offers new perspectives and will be an enlightening resource for obstetricians, paediatricians, epidemiologists, endocrinologists and sanitarians. Editor He-Feng Huang, M.D., is Professor and President of Women’s Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, China. Editor Jian-Zhong Sheng, Ph.D., is Professor at the Department of Pathology & Pathophysiology, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, China.

This volume provides the reader with an overview of the diverse functions of the RUNX family of genes. As highlighted in the introduction and several of the 29 chapters, humans and other mammals have three RUNX genes that are known to play specific roles in blood, bone and neuronal development. However, their evolutionary history has recently been traced back to unicellular organisms and their involvement in many well-known signaling pathways (Wnt, TGFb, Notch, Hippo) is indicative of a more general function in cell biology. Their documented roles in cell fate decisions include control of proliferation, differentiation, survival, senescence and autophagy. The pleiotropic effects of RUNX in development are mirrored in cancer, where RUNX genes can function as oncogenes that collaborate strongly with Myc family oncogenes or as tumour suppressor genes. In the latter role, they display hallmarks of both ‘gatekeepers’ that modulate p53 responses and ‘caretakers’ that protect the genome from DNA damage. Several chapters focus on the importance of these genes in leukemia research, where RUNX1 and CBFB are frequently affected by chromosomal translocations that generate fusion oncoproteins, while recent studies suggest wider roles for RUNX modulation in solid cancers. Moreover, RUNX genes are intimately involved in the development and regulation of the immune system, while emerging evidence suggests a role in innate immunity to infectious agents, including HIV. At the biochemical level, the RUNX family can serve as activators or repressors of transcription and as stable mediators of epigenetic memory through mitosis. Not surprisingly, RUNX activity is controlled at multiple levels, this includes miRNAs and a plethora of post-translational modifications. Several chapters highlight the interplay between the three mammalian RUNX genes, where cross-talk and partial functional redundancies are evident. Finally, structural analysis of the RUNX/CBFB interaction has led to the development of small molecule inhibitors that provide exciting new tools to decipher the roles of RUNX in development and as targets for therapy. This volume provides a compendium and reference source that will be of broad interest to cancer researchers, developmental biologists and immunologists.

Pathology of Multiple Pregnancy collates case material from over 500 autopsies (including embryos) and 1200 placentas from twins, triplets, and higher multiples with selected literature on human multiple reproduction. It emphasizes important new concepts of pathophysiology and interpretation of less than ideal outcomes of multiple conception based on over 30 years experience in the field. Aspects of perinatal pathology unique to twins and higher multiples are emphasized, with practical suggestions for the service pathologist, including items of potential medico-legal significance. Controversial topics, such as the value of studies of concordance for diseases or malformations, and the significance of inter-twin anastomoses, are addressed and suggestions made for further investigation. A close working relationship between pathologists and clinical colleagues is encouraged by discussion of clinico-pathological correlations. And, the most recent discussions on mechanisms of twinning and genetic versus environmental influences on the development of twins are presented.

In this final report on the 'The influence of maternal, fetal and child nutrition on the development of chronic disease in later life', the Subgroup on Maternal and Child Nutrition (SMCN) reviews the evidence that early life nutrition exerts long-term effects and influences the risk of chronic disease in adulthood, bringing together findings from both observational and experimental studies, and considering implications for maternal and child nutrition in the UK. SACN concludes that there is cause for concern about the later health consequences of compromised or excessive nutrient supply during early fetal and infant life. It notes that in the context of reproduction, the impact of current dietary patterns on women and girls is of particular concern, and considers that improving the nutritional status of women of childbearing age, infants and young children has the potential to improve the health of future generations. The Committee also offers recommendations for future research in this area, particularly emphasising the need for data which better characterise dietary patterns and patterns of pre and postnatal growth.

This work sees the light for various reasons. There is a general lack of detailed information about the earliest stages of human motor development. The reasons for this are explained more fully in the Introduction; here we may simply state that, apart from their intrinsic interest, earlier phenomena are fundamental to the comprehension of later phenomena rooted in them, whether pathological or normal. This is especially so in the rapidly - veloping young organism. At birth the neonate is catapulted into a profoundly different physical and social envir- ment requiring extremely diverse functioning: suffice it to mention aerial respiration, no longer being fed through the placenta and the cord, and the full impact of gravity on neonatal movements. The neonate generally adapts smoothly to the transition, as it has been equipped to do so during the 9 months of pregnancy. However, the study of the early stages of fetal motor development should not be exclusively directed towards the und- standing of functioning in the neonate.

Pathophysiology of Gestation, Volume II: Fetal-Placental Disorders covers important areas of reproduction such as maternal-fetal interrelationship, biochemistry and physiology of the fetoplacental unit, and use of amniotic fluid constituents as diagnostic tools for fetal well-being. This book is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the disorders of placental transfer, clearly illustrating the physical and biochemical processes involved in placental exchanges between mother and fetus. The second chapter is devoted to disorders of placental endocrine functions. The various methods used for studying placental hormone production and the errors in analysis and interpretation of the results are also elaborated. The pathophysiology of amniotic fluid disorders is discussed in Chapter 3, while the genetic factors affecting growth and development from the gamete stage through fertilization and organ formation are described in Chapter 4. The last chapter considers the teratologic impact of the environmental factors on fetal growth and development. This volume is valuable to medical students and individuals concerned with the disorders of the maternal-fetal interrelationship.
