Emerging technologies can intimidate with their cost and uncertainty—this book provides flexible options for adopting the most popular ones. Introducing new technologies to your library can be a daunting process; they can be costly, they may be unfamiliar to many staff members, and their success is far from assured. To address these concerns, Best Technologies for Public Libraries accommodates budgets large and small, providing options for both the ambitious and the cost-conscious. Authors Christopher DeCristofaro, James Hutter, and Nick Tanzi provide a resource for staff looking to incorporate a number of emerging technologies into their library and makerspaces. Each chapter explores a new technology, including 3D printing, drones, augmented reality, and virtual reality, covering how it works, the selection process, training, sample programming, best practices, and relevant policy. By describing a variety of program and service ideas across age groups, the book gives readers the ability to first evaluate them within the context of their own organization before incorporating ideas à la carte. This approach helps readers to adopt these new technologies and create policies with uses already in mind. Learn the basics of how emerging technologies, including 3D printing, augmented reality, virtual reality, and drones work Read recommendations for how these emerging technologies can be used to develop library programs and services Build a framework for developing policy pursuant to these emerging technologies Understand best practices in adopting the aforementioned emerging technologies

This book examines the evolution of airpower and specifically the growth and proliferation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs). While most existing literature examines either the law or ethics of RPAs, and some newer scholarship looks to the battlefield effectiveness (the gains from strikes versus the potential for ‘blowback, etc.), this work investigates it from a broader military perspective. It examines the strategy for employment of RPAs across the spectrum of warfare, the potential deterrent value of RPAs in some circumstances, and the resulting ability of RPAs to fundamentally shift the character of when and how wars are fought. The central aim of this book is to evaluate the role of ‘drones’ in warfare to date, and make basic projections on how states will adopt RPAs and UCAVs in the future. At the core is the goal of answering a broad, underlying research question: How will the RPA innovation impact military strategy and international security? This book will be of much interest to students of airpower, drone warfare, military and strategic studies, security studies and IR.

Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Engineering - Robotics, , language: English, abstract: The Department of Transportation recently announced that it intends to impose a registration system for drones (LINK 1). Drones (scientific name unmanned aerial vehicles) are aircraft that do not need a human pilot on board. Their flight is monitored remotely from the ground or via computers embedded on the vehicle. Previously restricted to military operations, these vehicles are increasingly finding applications in the civilian world—firefighting, policing, commerce, research and monitoring etc. According to the secretary, registration will stress the need for drone operators and hobbyists to observe safe flight practices and apply airspace rules (LINK 2). This announcement is a clear indication of just how profound drones are influencing and will continue to impact our lives. In this article, I present ten ways through which drones are shaping our future.

Given the popularity of drones and the fact that they are easy and cheap to buy, it is generally expected that the ubiquity of drones will significantly increase within the next few years. This raises questions as to what is technologically feasible (now and in the future), what is acceptable from an ethical point of view and what is allowed from a legal point of view. Drone technology is to some extent already available and to some extent still in development. The aim and scope of this book is to map the opportunities and threats associated with the use of drones and to discuss the ethical and legal issues of the use of drones. This book provides an overview of current drone technologies and applications and of what to expect in the next few years. The question of how to regulate the use of drones in the future is addressed, by considering conditions and contents of future drone legislation and by analyzing issues surrounding privacy and safeguards that can be taken. As such, this book is valuable to scholars in several disciplines, such as law, ethics, sociology, politics and public administration, as well as to practitioners and others who may be confronted with the use of drones in their work, such as professionals working in the military, law enforcement, disaster management and infrastructure management. Individuals and businesses with a specific interest in drone use may also find in the nineteen contributions contained in this volume unexpected perspectives on this new field of research and innovation. Bart Custers is Associate Professor and Head of Research at eLaw, the Center for Law and Digital Technologies at Leiden University, The Netherlands. He has presented his work at international conferences in the United States, China, Japan, the Middle East and throughout Europe and has published over 80 scientific, professional and popularizing publications, including three books.

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, International Islamic University Malaysia, course: LE 4000 English for Academic Writing, language: English, abstract: Since ancient times, people have faced the necessity to transport goods or merchandizes or mail from one location to another. In almost every part of the world, runners were used by the rulers to convey their messages even before the time it was documented that postal services existed that dates to 255 BC. To fulfill their delivery needs, people came up with different solutions such as using animals for delivery purpose and later structured delivery services were introduced. Blake (2010) stated that in the UK, King Henry VII appointed the position "Master of the Posts" and that eventually became the office of the Postmaster General for The Royal Mail back in 1516. But long gone are the days where mediocre technologies or tools were used for delivery purposes. In this modern era, we have many sophisticated delivery services that are using modern day inventions like airplanes, delivery trucks, cargo ships and others. But to take things even further, little mechanical gremlins, drones, is gaining massive popularity to take charge of the delivery system.
